The international community needs to improve the current system of environmental policymaking if the challenges set out in the sustainable development paradigm are to be met. In the past thirty years, the number and scope of multilateral environmental agreements have expanded rapidly as has the number of international institutions that facilitate and oversee the implementation of international agreements.
