Transgenic Fish

IATP works in three national coalitions (GE Food Alert, Genetic Engineering Action Network and the Campaign on Genetically Engineered Fish) to inform the public about threats to wild fish from transgenic (genetically engineered) and other non-native species and to persuade them to avoid these fish.

'More recently IATP has participated in Food and Drug Administration (FDA) meetings, seeking to prevent the release of 'Glofish', an ornamental aquarium fish that has been engineered to express a sea coral fluorescence gene causing it to glow . As the first genetically engineered animal to be made commercially available in the United States, the Glofish represents the thin end of the wedge, with the Aquabounty company's genetically engineered salmon awaiting FDA approval as a 'new animal drug'. Successful approval would open the flood gates to at least 35 other species of genetically engineered fish which already under development. IATP will continue to address these issues as they arise
