US FDA Advisory Committee Finds Using Human Antibiotic in Cattle Could Create Antibiotic Resistance and Threaten Human Health

A key advisory committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) this week rejected the claim of the manufacturer Intervet, that its new cattle antibiotic cefquinome could be considered safe for human health. Cefquinome, proposed for use against respiratory disease in cattle, is a 4th generation cephalosporin, a class which includes the important human drug cefepime.

The Keep Antibiotics Working coalition today praised the U.S. Department of Agriculture for proposing a new labeling standard for grass-fed beef that will help preserve vital human and animal drugs by allowing consumers to choose meats produced in grass-based systems that use fewer antibiotics. The proposal gives ranchers incentives to cut antibiotic use.

IATP Announces New President - Jim Harkness

The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) named Jim Harkness as its new president today. Harkness, a Minnesota native, will replace current IATP president and founder, Mark Ritchie, who is resigning to run for public office in Minnesota.
