The vast majority of logging operations in Papua New Guinea are illegal, environmentally unsustainable and provide little benefit to the country, according to a new report Tuesday.

The German Development Service (Deutscher Entwicklungsdienst, DED) has joined hands with the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry (MAWF), to manage and support eight community forests in communal areas in the north.

The total area nationwide covered by forests has risen to 12.3mil ha, or 37.8% of total land area, from 36.7% in 2004. Forests classified as rich and fully rehabilitated rose to 4.6% in 2004 from 3.4% in 2000, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD). Vietnam has set a target of 43% forest cover by 2010.

Last year, U.S. Forest Service officials asked private entrepreneurs to "sharpen their pencils" and propose new money-making ventures for the cash-strapped Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. The response was less than overwhelming. The agency received only three proposals, despite the volcano's international notoriety and ongoing eruption.
