The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) is looking for a full-time Media and Communications Manager, based in our Minneapolis office.

Who are we?  

IATP is a nonprofit policy advocacy organization with its headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Our mission is to work locally and globally at the intersection of policy and practice to ensure fair and sustainable food, farm and trade systems. Staff match high-level research and analysis with on-the-ground engagement to bring good policy into practice. In addition to our headquarters in Minneapolis, we have small offices in Washington, D.C. and Berlin, Germany.

The Position:  

The Media and Communications Manager will work with our small communications team as well as our program and development staff. They will oversee traditional media relations, contribute to digital media strategies and implementation and help develop programmatic and organizational communications strategy. This person will edit all IATP publications, ranging from articles to reports, press releases, email communications and more. They will compile and send IATP’s newsletter and assist in disseminating other external email communications. The Media and Communications Manager is expected to participate in team and organizational strategy meetings.   

Responsibilities:  

  • Media relations: Lead and develop the organization’s media strategy, including drafting press releases and media statements in collaboration with program staff, conducting media outreach and developing relationships, and identifying ad responding to current events and media moments relevant to IATP’s work.  
  • Editing: Provide editorial feedback based on target audience and copyedit publications using IATP’s style guide and adhering to AP Style.  
  • Email communications: Compile and draft content for monthly newsletter and other email communications using pre-set templates in Mailchimp.  
  • Webinar support: Provide technical assistance to the digital communications manager during webinars hosted on Zoom as needed.  
  • Project management: Coordinate with the digital communications manager and use the organization’s project management tools to help manage communications projects.  
  • Website management: Publish and organize content to the website (Drupal site).  
  • Other responsibilities as determined by need. 


Preferred Qualities and Qualifications:  

  • Committed to IATP’s mission and values.  
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience working in media or communications fields.  
  • Post-secondary education or equivalent experience  
  • Experience conducting outreach and promotion to media outlets.  
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills; knowledge of AP Style is preferred.  
  • Proficient in MS Office and high level of comfort with other digital tools and databases, including email and website platforms (e.g., Mailchimp and Drupal).  
  • Familiarity with media management platforms (e.g., Cision).  
  • Familiarity with project management software, including Microsoft Teams.  
  • Demonstrated professionalism and strong interpersonal communication skills.  
  • Proven organizational abilities with meticulous attention to detail. 
  • Preferred: Prior nonprofit experience, managing events and video editing skills. 

 
Physical Requirements:  

  • It is preferred that the position is based in Minneapolis and follow a flexible hybrid schedule  
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.  
     

Benefits and Compensation:  

Compensation for this position is based upon qualifications and experience, with a starting annual salary of $62,000 - $72,000. IATP offers excellent health insurance, a Health Savings Account (HSA), paid vacation and holidays, sick leave, a 403B retirement plan with employer match, employer paid life, AD&D and LTD insurance, and an optional employer paid mobile phone plan. Enjoy a lively, collegial, flexible and dog-friendly work environment. This is a hybrid position in the Minneapolis office and requires two in-person workdays per week.
