IATP signed a letter in 1999 to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requesting action to limit the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture. As a result of that letter, Congressman Sherrod Brown reached out to IATP seeking endorsement for the Preservation of Essential Antibiotics for Human Diseases Act (H.R. 3266), legislation he introduced in 2000. This would require drug companies to submit proof to the FDA of reasonable certainty that antibiotics and chemically related drugs fed to animals would not cause antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Below is Congressman Sherrod Brown's letter, the bill summary and IATP's letter of endorsement.
