Published in the Minnesota Journal of Global Trade, Winter 2000, Vol. 9, Issue 1. This paper was also a presentation given by Mark Ritchie at the International Cooperative Agricultural Organization General Assembly in Quebec City, Quebec on August 29, 1999. The focus of this paper is the the impact of agricultural export dumping by grain corporations based in the U.S. and the impact of dumping on two public policy concerns: sustainable agriculture and the human right to food security.
The first section looks at the link between WTO agricultural trade rules and the increase in export dumping. Second is the impact of this dumping on efforts by farmers to move to more sustainable farming practices. The third section deals with the impact of dumping on food security in terms of the right to food in the United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
