NAFTA and the Politics of Transportation is an analysis of the consequences of liberalizing the transportation industry under NAFTA. A report issued to the U.S. President and Congress by the Congressional Labor Advisory Committee for Trade Negotiations and Trade Policy summed it up by predicting NAFTA would “liberalize land transportation and certain landside maritime activities at the expense of U.S. domestic transportation carriers and their employees, and at the risk of compromising safety throughout our transportation network”. Along with an increase in the numbers of trucks on the highways creating more pollution and increased energy demand, there were also no provisions for promoting sustainable use of energy for transportation, it ensured products and food would continue to travel extremely long distances to reach intended destinations and would expand trade in natural resources.
