The U.S. Forest Service says it has slightly modified its plan for allowing cars and other motorized vehicles on land it owns in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in northern Wisconsin.

Forest Supervisor Jeanne Higgins says the change adds access to another 205 miles. She says the new plan will open about 2,360 miles of roads and 330 miles of trails to vehicles, including ATVs, in January.

About 4,600 miles of forest service-owned roads are open to vehicles now, but the agency says some roads that get little use and have not been maintained are being closed.

Counting state and local roads, Higgins says about 6,800 miles will be accessible in the 1.5 million-acre forest under the new plan.Associated Press via the Capital Times
