Press Release
For Immediate Release

Loggers, landowners and arborists are invited to participate in a chainsaw safety seminar with an instructor from the Forest Industry Safety Training Alliance (FISTA). This is a hands-on workshop sponsored by the Kickapoo Woods Cooperative(KWC). Enrollment is limited. The KWC will schedule additional sessions of chainsaw safety training whenever sufficient people express an interest in the class. If you cannot attend this time, but would like to take the workshop in the future, please contact the co-op.

Participants will spend 4 hours indoors doing the classroom portion, take a one-hour break for lunch, then go into the woods for at least 2 hours of practical experience using the techniques. The workshop will cover proper body mechanics in chainsaw use, personal protective equipment, tools necessary in safely felling trees and their use, proper saw maintenance including sharpening and carburetor adjustment, considerations for felling a tree, releasing limbs and spring poles under pressure, and more, plus demonstrations of tree felling, limbing, bucking and topping. Opportunities to try these techniques will depend on attendance and site conditions. Participants are encouraged to bring chainsaws, safety equipment, lunch (or buy it locally), and drinking water.

The class will meet at 8:00 am on Saturday, April 24 at the Kickapoo Reserve office, 505 North Mill Street, La Farge.

Each participant will receive a certificate of completion. Insurance companies for loggers consider participation in this FISTA training a reduction of risk and frequently offer reduced premiums to loggers whose crews have taken this training.

Price of the workshop is $20. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Send your payment with name, address and contact information to Kickapoo Woods Cooperative, P.O. Box 71, La Farge WI 54639. For more information, contact Paul Bader at 608-625-2515; domehome@mwt.net.
