There are new accusations at a local chicken plant that's already seen its share of controversy.
Former workers at the Moorefield Pilgrim's Pride plant are coming out with their own claims of abuse. Some of them say they've developed painful conditions; others claim they're too sick to work, all from what they reportedly experienced while working for Pilgrims Pride.
The group says they were exposed to chemicals that caused breathing problems. Some say their doctors have traced various ailments and other disorders to that exposure.
Tuesday, the group rallied in front of the plant to urge Pilgrim's Pride to take better safety precautions and stop using certain chemicals.
"I'm hoping they'll help take care of the people and make the plant a better place," says former plant employee Melissa Robin. "People need jobs, but we need a better place to work in."
Pilgrims Pride says their safety record is actually better than most poultry plants. A spokesperson tells WHSV News that lost-time claims have actually dropped 60 percent since Pilgrims Pride took over the Moorefield operation.WHSV/Tim Saunders
