The EU will today ask for a panel to be set up to examine the compatibility of US anti-dumping methodology with WTO rules, the European Commission said.
The US uses "zeroing," a method of calculating the impact of dumping that ignores negative margins connected with the practice and therefore results in an unfair increase of the dumping liability of EU exporters.
The commission said the methodology is no longer permitted by WTO rules. The commission's request covers 31 anti-dumping cases involving such EU exports as steel, pasta, ball bearings and chemicals.
"The US zeroing practice is negatively affecting our exports to the US and the problem will only growth further if zeroing is allowed to continue," EU trade commissioner Pascal Lamy said.
"Despite our efforts to solve this matter amicably, the US failed to solve this issue. In these curcumstances, we have no choice but to request a panel," Lamy said.AFX.COM:
