A group of some 70 American companies and representative organizations signed a letter last week to US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick, indirectly criticising the Brazilian proposal to negotiate the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) in "three tracks." This proposal is the main theme of the letter, according to one source, although the name of Brazil only appears three times in the principal text. The protest of the group centers on the attempts "of some US trade partners" to create a more limited accord. One suggestion from Brazil is to transfer discussion of themes like intellectual property and investments from Alca to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
