BANGALORE, Nov 4 (DHNS) -- The restructured National Farmers Coordination Committee has decided to take out a bullock cart rally from Kashmir to Kanyakumari starting from January second week as a protest against the import of agricultural produce.
Addressing a press conference here today, President of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) Prof M D Nanjunda Swamy said that the rally is planned to organise farmers to fight the onslaught of genetically modified seeds, agricultural imports and others.
The rally will simultaneously start from two points. Farmer leader Choudary Mahendra Singh Tikayat will lead the rally from Kashmir where as another rally will leave from Kanyakumari under the leadership himself, Mr Swamy said. The rally after traversing through all states will culminate at Mumbai on February 19. This decision was taken by the farmers coordination committee which was restructured in a meeting held in Hyderabad recently. The restructured committee includes Mr Choudary Mahendra Singh Tikayat of Uttar Pradesh, Prof Nanjundaswamy of Karnataka, Mr Ajmir Singh Lakhowala of Punjab and Mr Vijay Javandhia of Maharashtra, he said adding that Mr Yudhveer Singh of Delhi is the member secretary. The committee has also organised a massive rally of farmers in New Delhi on March 19, 2001, to pressurise the Union government to come out of World Trade Organisation (WTO) so as to save the country from the clutches of open market.
