Aberdeen Press and Journal | June 16, 2003 A Fair-trade day is to be held in Aberfeldy later this month to demand justice for farmers in developing countries. At an event in the town square on June 28, members of the Aberfeldy Traidcraft Group will ask MP Pete Wishart to lobby in Westminster for fairer world trade. There will also be street theatre in the town, which was the first in Scotland to be awarded Fairtradestatus.

Explaining why the event is so important for the Traidcraft Group secretary of the organisation, Faith Aitken, said: "Free trade isn't always fair trade for poor people. Western multinationals and subsidised agribusiness can compete on the world market. But small farmers and fledgling industries in developing countries don't have a hope against the power of these global players.

"The only reason western businesses have grown so big is because we have protected them in the past. Now we are telling developing countries that this is no longer fair.

"We must make the international rules that govern trade weighted in favour of poor people and the planet as a whole - so that they too can become global players. During 24 hours in June, every MP in Britain will hear this from their constituents."Aberdeen Press and Journal:
