A new survey of infection control professionals suggests there is a lot of room for progress even in health care facilities in preventing deadly MRSA infections.

The Association for Professionals in Infection Control said 59 percent of members report their facility had made improvements in the past six months. But half said more could or should be done.

The troubling survey registered complaints about doctors and nurses who resist good handwashing and administrators who, as one respondent put it, view control of the antibiotic-resistant infection as offering "no return on investment."

We're glad Gov. Chris Gregoire has a scientific panel working on the issue - from individuals to some health care institutions to the federal government (which contributes to resistant staph strains by allowing profligate use of antibiotics on farms and ranches), safer practices are needed.Seattle Post Intelligencer
