Reflecting its concerns over an increasing number of drug-resistant pathogens that affect humans, the Food and Drug Administration has decided to limit the use of livestock antibiotics. Under the FDA's new policy, manufacturers of proposed livestock medicines are required to show that their products will not cause the development of disease-causing organisms that are resistant to drugs for treating humans. Livestock antibiotics currently available in the market will also be examined by the agency. The routine administration of antibiotics to both healthy and sick livestock and the possible emergence of superbacteria that are harmful to humans have raised alarm in the medical communityWall Street Journal:
