European agriculture commissioner Frans Fischler said he is heading to the meeting of World Trade Organisation trade ministers in Doha, Qatar, later this week "firmly committed" to the launch of a new trade of global trade talks.

However, he said there must be special conditions for developing countries to help them adapt to further demands for further liberalisation in the agriculture sector.

In a speech prepared for delivery at the Food and Agriculture Organisation in Rome, Fischler conceded the European Union's common agricultural policy is not perfect but said it is being reformed progressively.

"In that process, we have opened up our market to become the major market for exports of agricultural products from the developing," he said.

"And we are ready to go further," he said.

The WTO meeting runs from Nov 9 to 13, with trade experts cautiously optimistic a new round of negotiations will be launched.:
