The European Commission called on the US and Canada to lift sanctions imposed in a row over beef containing hormones, saying it has complied with a WTO ruling on the issue.
The WTO in 1998 condemned the EU for banning the use of certain growth promoting hormones without an scientific assessment of the risk.
The commission said it has now carried out full scientific studies.
EU trade commissioner Pascal Lamy said a new EU directive concerning the prohibition on the use of hormones has now entered into force, definitively banning one growth hormone and provisionally banning five others.
"Today's move shows that we are fully committed to abiding by our WTO obligations .. I now call on the US and Canada to lift their trade sanctions against the EU," he said.AFX.COM:
