The ongoing drought in the U.S. and threats of food crises around the world point to the need for new solutions to cope with unstable weather and harvests. Since the first food price crisis in 2008, IATP, along with a growing number of civil society organizations, researchers and governments, have renewed and refocused work on grain reserves as a response to significantly diminished food stocks for international markets and an important instrument to build food security. In July 2012, IATP released Grain Reserves and the Food Price Crisis: Selected Writings from 2008–2012. The reader is an introduction to the issues and a snapshot of the important research and advocacy now supporting this important yet neglected tool for stability in food markets.
Please join us for a webinar to hear from two experts on reserves. Mamadou Goita, executive secretary of the West African Peasants’ and Farmers’ Network (ROPPA) will discuss efforts to advance regional reserves in West Africa. Daryll Ray, director of the Agricultural Policy Analysis Center at the University of Tennessee will present recent economic evidence for reserves. IATP's Sophia Murphy will moderate.
