In 1994 IATP and IATP Board Member Steve Shrybman from the Canadian Environmental Law Association drafted the “Marrakesh Proposals for Sustainable Trade”. This was a set of formal definitions for an international agreement linking environmental policy with trade organizations. IATP traveled to Marrakesh, Morocco and presented the agreement, signed by 80 NGOs from 12 countries, to the heads of state attending the GATT negotiations where an agreement was reached to establish the WTO. This became known as the “Marrakesh Agreement”. IATP was the only American NGO present.
