A concern related to genetically modified organisms is the potential environmental harm if these organisms escape or are released into the environment. Harm can take may take different forms from transient to permanent in time frame and from local to global in scope. Thus, to define harm it is first necessary to distinguish between the terms risk and hazard, which are often confused.
