It must be the "poll on trade" season in the U.S. In a short follow-up to our post last week on the American public's opposition to NAFTA, a new CNN poll released today found that for the first time in their polliing history, a majority of Americans (51 percent) hold negative views on free trade. This negative view on free trade is up from 48 percent in 2006 and 35 percent in 2000. The CNN poll found that women, older Americans, and low-income Americans had the most negative views on free trade. The good news is that detailed ideas on a fair trade alternative are rapidly emerging. We've written about the TRADE Act introduced in Congress last month, and IATP will publish more on how to build a fair trade system throughout the year.
