Job Description

DESCRIPTION: The intern will help IATP’s program on the meat industry conduct critical research and analysis on intergovernmental efforts to address livestock’s contribution to climate change. In particular, the intern will conduct in-depth research on the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Green House Gases Livestock Research Group and identify the key thrust of the initiative, the politics behind the recommendations, science and methodology used and assess how this initiative is being used in meeting commitments made in the Paris Climate Accord. This work will assist IATP’s awareness raising on the negative impacts of industrial meat production with the goal to transform the food system to one that is socially just and ecologically sustainable. The work will be used as part of a joint research project between GRAIN and IATP.

RESPONSIBILITIES and Useful Skills: Excellent research and writing skills with an interest and aptitude for critical thinking; self-starter and independent worker; ability to interview people on the phone as needed for research; assisting the program director with research needs for reports/publications

TIMESPAN: September 2017 to December 2017

LOCATION: At the IATP office in Minneapolis or off-site. Weekly check-ins on skype with supervisor in either case.

DURATION/HOURS: a minimum of 10 hours a week

EXPERIENCE and QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate level preferred. Looking for a smart self-starter who is able to work independently with limited guidance; with excellent research and writing skills; fluent in English; interested in transformative agriculture, food and climate policies; interested in learning about policy advocacy and challenging agribusiness control of the food system (in particular, the meat industry). Good Communication skills. Comfortable on the phone and email with the possibility of communicating with experts in the field.
