The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) is looking for a part-time Interim Communications Coordinator (15 hours/week), based in our Minneapolis office.

Your communications expertise should range from media relations to writing and copyediting skills, allowing you to apply these skills in support of IATP’s mission. Additionally, you have an interest in and experience working on issues related to agriculture, food systems and/or climate change. Strong project management skills are essential, enabling you to manage a diverse workload and adapt to new tasks as programmatic needs evolve. IATP is a nonprofit policy advocacy organization with its headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Our mission is to work locally and globally at the intersection of policy and practice to ensure fair and sustainable food, farm and trade systems. Staff match high-level research and analysis with on-the-ground engagement to bring good policy into practice. The Position:

The Interim Communications Coordinator will work up to 15 hours per week from September 3- December 20, 2024, supporting the communications team and program staff. The communications coordinator will oversee media relations with support from the team. Using AP Style guidelines and adhering to IATP’s in-house style guide, the Interim Communications Coordinator will copyedit all IATP publications, ranging from articles to reports, press releases, email communications and more. At the end of each month, the Interim Communications Coordinator will compile and send IATP’s newsletter. Additionally, they will assist in disseminating other external email communications as required. The Interim Communications Coordinator is expected to participate in weekly team communications meetings and attend all-staff meetings as necessary. 

Responsibilities:

  • Media relations: Draft press releases and media statements in collaboration with program staff, conduct media outreach to announce new IATP publications, share media coverage with team; respond to inbound media requests with support from team.
  • Editing: Copyedit IATP publications using IATP’s style guide and adhering to AP Style.
  • Email communications: Compile and draft content for monthly newsletter and other email communications using pre-set templates in Mailchimp. 
  • Webinar support: Provide technical assistance to the digital communications manager during webinars hosted on Zoom as needed.
  • Project management: Coordinate with the digital communications manager and use the organization’s project management tools to help manage communications projects.
  • Website management: Publish and organize content to the website (Drupal site).
  • Other responsibilities as determined by need, including participation in weekly communications meetings.

Preferred Qualities and Qualifications:

  • Committed to IATP’s mission and values
  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience working in media, communications or public relations fields
  • Minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience conducting outreach and promotion to media outlets
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills; Knowledge of AP Style is preferred 
  • Proficient in MS Office and high level of comfort with other digital tools and databases, including email and website platforms (e.g., Mailchimp and Drupal)
  • Familiarity with media management platforms (e.g., Cision) 
  • Familiarity with project management software (or Microsoft Teams as a project management tool) 
  • Strong sense of professionalism and stellar interpersonal skills
  • Well organized and detail oriented 
  • Experience working with nonprofits a plus

Physical Requirements:

  • The position will be based in Minneapolis and follow a flexible hybrid schedule
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer

Benefits and Compensation:

Compensation for this position is based upon qualifications and experience, with a starting range of $18-22/hour.
