The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) is looking for a full-time Finance and Operations Director, based in our Minneapolis, Minnesota office. The Finance and Operations Director will be a mission-oriented, strategic leader with experience managing finance and operations in a nonprofit organization. This position is new and will report to the Executive Director. The Finance and Operations Director will work closely with IATP staff to provide coordination, integration and efficiency for our people and systems in pursuit of our mission.

IATP is a nonprofit think tank and policy advocacy organization with its headquarters in Minneapolis, MN. We have a 35-year history of pursuing just and resilient food and agriculture policies that benefit family farmers, food and agriculture workers, rural communities and the planet. Our team of 17 staff work locally, nationally and globally, connecting the dots in the food system. We match high-level research and analysis with on-the-ground engagement to bring good policy into practice. In addition to Minneapolis, we have small offices in Washington, D.C. and Berlin, Germany. 

Who are you?

The ideal candidate has experience developing and managing robust financial and operational systems in a nonprofit environment. We are looking for a collaborator, someone who brings excellent communication and analytical skills, who enjoys solving problems, is comfortable in a fast-changing environment and can translate strategy into practice. The candidate will be comfortable in a leadership role and bring personal integrity, credibility and a commitment to the IATP mission.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and monitor the organization’s financial affairs, including development and implementation of sound fiscal management practices and internal controls.
  • Lead and maintain compliance with all federal, state, local and private reporting and registration requirements, including tax returns, federal and state lobbying reporting, and other returns or registrations pertaining to charitable organizations and solicitations.
  • Manage monthly bookkeeping, including payroll, invoicing/billing and deposits.
  • Manage organization’s cash flow, financial trend analysis, budget and forecasting.
  • Track and report on funding with development staff, including reporting on budgeting, spending and reconciliations according to grant guidelines.
  • Create and present financial reports to the Executive Director and Board of Directors, and support the Board of Directors Finance and Investment committees.
  • Coordinate and lead annual audit process, annual tax return and 990 filing.
  • Oversee and lead the annual budgeting and planning process, working with the Executive Director.
  • Ensure office systems and employment policies and practices are legally compliant and reflect best practices in conformity with IATP values, working with the support of the administration team. 
  • Support the overall goals and objectives of IATP through additional responsibilities as needed.

Required Skills

  • Deep nonprofit finance knowledge, including nonprofit financial management.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and proven expertise in financial modeling and budgeting, and financial software.
  • Knowledge of grants management and administration.
  • Experience with final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination for a nonprofit organization.
  • Experience in a management role; demonstrated ability to take initiative, work collaboratively and take decisions.
  • Comfortable working in a reactive environment, with competing deadlines and priorities and able to focus while advancing several projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate and work comfortably with a variety of partners and cultures.

Required Experience and Education

  • Minimum of five years of financial management and operations experience, including in a nonprofit environment.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor degree or equivalent experience.
  • Position requires favorable result of criminal background check and I-9 verification.

Preferred

  • Knowledge and experience of Human Resources.
  • Knowledge of Information Technology.
  • Experience with Fund-EZ.
  • Familiarity with international financial transactions.
  • Willing to work in-office three or more days per week.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Salary and Benefits

The compensation for this role is $70,000-$85,000, commensurate with skills and experience, internal equity and IATP’s financial capacity.
