The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) is looking for a Community Farm to School and Early Care Evaluation and Data Analysis Intern, based in our Minneapolis, Minnesota office.

IATP is a nonprofit think tank and policy advocacy organization with its headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. IATP works locally and globally at the intersection of policy and practice to ensure fair and sustainable food, farm and trade systems. We have a 35-year history of pursuing just and resilient food and agriculture policies that benefit family farmers, food and agriculture workers, rural communities and the planet. Our team of 17 staff work locally, nationally and globally, connecting the dots in the food system. We match high-level research and analysis with on-the-ground engagement to bring good policy into practice. In addition to Minneapolis, we have small offices in Washington, D.C. and Berlin, Germany. 

Who are you?

You are a talented, highly motivated and proactive individual with an interest in supporting Farm to School and Early Care programs. This is a part-time internship (~10 hours per week) for approximately three months in Minneapolis, Minnesota with a flexible hybrid schedule (in-person and remote). This internship has a flexible start date, with an ideal start in August or September 2023.

What will you do?

IATP is seeking an intern to support statewide Farm to School and Early Care evaluation activities through survey data cleaning and analysis, coordination of site visits and interviews, and drafting components of evaluation materials. The intern will work closely with the Community Food Systems program director to support this work, as well as coordinating with partners on the MN Farm to School Leadership Team, MN Farm to Early Care Network and at partner schools and early care sites.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The focus of this role would be supporting data cleaning, evaluation and follow up related to data collected through Farm to Early Care and Farm to School surveys and other evaluation activities contributing to published statewide evaluation materials. Activities would include:

  • Survey data cleaning and organization, ensuring collected responses are easy to understand and interpret
  • Summarizing survey short answers, basic qualitative analysis to identify themes
  • Coordinating school and early care site visits with partners
  • Attending a limited number of site visits to take photos and support evaluation interviews
  • Conducting virtual follow-up interviews with schools and early care providers who indicate they would be open to further conversation
  • Drafting components of statewide evaluation materials, including brief case studies highlighting success stories from individual schools and early cares
  • Using GIS to map Farm to School and Early Care data
  • Support creation of supportive Farm to School and Early Care communications materials (such as recipes, handouts, etc.)

Supporting Farm to School and Farm to Early Care work more generally would also be a component of this position, including:

  • Farm Early Care network support: send bimonthly Farm to Early Care newsletter, update website, support network meetings, support maintaining Network list, provide technical assistance or support to early care providers
  • Farm to School grantee support: update website, provide administrative support or other information as needed for Community Food Systems Program Director to support technical assistance and support of Farm to School Grantees
  • Other tasks and research as needed

Additional projects may be assigned as opportunities arise based on the needs of the program and interests of the intern.

Experience and qualifications:

  • Experience in evaluation, data analysis, organizing complex information
  • Experience in administrative tasks, meeting planning and coordinating with partners
  • Experience with GIS mapping and Squarespace website editing is a plus
  • Self-motivated, reliable and able to work independently
  • Commitment to the mission of IATP and work of program staff; curiosity and eagerness to learn about our subject areas
  • Profound sense of professionalism and stellar interpersonal skills; comfortable representing IATP, reaching out to and communicating with a wide range of partners on IATP’s behalf
  • Well-organized and detail-oriented
  • Abundance of creativity and enthusiasm
  • Access to a reliable computer (a computer can be provided for use in-office if requested)

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • The ability to travel within Minnesota.

COMPENSATION and BENEFITS:

Compensation for this internship is based upon qualifications and experience, with an hourly range of $18-20/hour. IATP offers interns paid safe and sick time leave. Enjoy a lively, collegial, flexible and dog-friendly work environment.
